This field procedure was used to check the accuracy of the CTD conductivity sensor. No adjustments were made to the factory-determined calibration parameters or to the conductivity data collected as part of the logging operation, although conductivity values were converted to specific-conductance values as described below. A program is run two to three times on the CTD producing twenty readings of the standard being analyzed during each run. The readings of each run are retained and shown below. Note: the CTD does not provide a specific-conductance reading corrected to 25 degrees Celsius, but gives the fluid conductivity at the prevailing fluid temperature. To convert to specific conductance, use the formula (Wilke and Radtke, 1998): SC = C/[1+0.0191(T-25)] where: SC = Specific conductance, in millisiemens per centimeter, C = Measured conductivity, in millisiemens per centimeter, and T = Measured temperature, in degrees Celsius. Oki. This batch file runs the upload.exe program (version 1.11) supplied by Ocean Sensors, Inc., and operates on the conductivity, temperature, and pressure data to provide salinity data and depths that are dependent on salinity and pressure. The following files were generated by the upload.exe program: dir.inf Contains a list of data files that were stored in the CTD memory at the time the upload.exe program was executed, and the name of the program or loop that was used to generate each data file. status.inf Contains a list of factory calibration parameters and the start and stop times of data collection. loopa.inf Contains the logging program or loop with the designation "a" stored in the CTD memory. This loop lists information every second for CTD calibration. loopc.inf Contains the logging program or loop with the designation "c" stored in the CTD memory. This loop stores information every second as the CTD is lowered through the water column. 1.dat Contains raw data generated by the program loopc.inf. This file contains channel output (variables AS0, AS1, AS3, and AS6) from the analog/digital converter as the sum of 99 conversions (the value of 99 was programmed in the loop). Fluid density for each data sample was computed using the 1980 International Equation of State (UNESCO, 1981, p. 17-19). The depth of submergence for each data sample was then estimated by assuming a hydrostatic water column and accounting for the change in fluid density with depth. On the basis of the assumption of a hydrostatic water column, the pressure at each sample depth is determined by the weight of the overlying water column of possible variable density. For the uppermost sample, the depth of submergence was computed from: d = p/(rho*g) where: d = estimated depth of submergence of pressure transducer [L] rho = estimated fluid density at sampled depth [M/L^3] g = acceleration due to gravity [L/T^2] (9.81 meters per squared second) p = pressure from CTD [M/T^2/L] (the pressure at a depth of zero submergence was assumed to be zero). For subsequent samples (all samples below the uppermost sample), the depth of submergence, d, was computed by assuming that fluid density varies linearly with depth between successive samples and the acceleration due to gravity is constant: d = d' + 2*(p-p')/(rho*g+rho'*g) where: d' = estimated depth of submergence at sample depth immediately overlying current sample [L], p' = pressure at sample depth immediately overlying current sample [M/T^2/L], rho' = fluid density at depth immediately overlying current sample [M/L^3]. NOTE: The value for the acceleration due to gravity, g, may differ from the value used in the getdata.bat program. Thus, the values of submergence would be slightly different if the g for the current site was used. However, the depth of the sensor is tied to the cable markings, not the transducer depths. The transducer depths, once adjusted to the cable markings as discussed below, are only used to determine intermediate depths between the cable marks. DESCRIPTION OF DEPTH CORRECTIONS: During the logging operation, the CTD was stopped (paused from the lowering) at some or all of the marked intervals (measured from the water-level measuring point), to provide a check on the depths of submergence based on the data processing above. Times of pauses on the field sheet were from the operator's watch, and may not coincide exactly with the times from the CTD listed below. Standard is stainless steel cable used to lower the CTD down the well. Table 4. The depths of submergence from the cable markings (accounting for the length of the CTD probe) were rounded to the nearest 0.01 foot and compared to the calculated depths of submergence, also rounded to the nearest 0.01 foot, and a linear-regression equation was computed to estimate a corrected depth of submergence: D = d - (A*d + B) where: D = corrected depth of submergence of pressure transducer, in feet, d = estimated depth of submergence of pressure transducer, in feet, from pressure, conductivity, and temperature readings, A = 0.02050 feet per foot (slope of linear regression equation), B = -9.45076 feet (intercept of linear regression equation), and r^2 = 0.99906 (correlation coefficient squared or coefficient of determination). The altitude of the pressure sensor, in feet relative to the mean sea level datum, was determined from the difference between the known water-level altitude in the well, in feet, and the corrected depth of submergence in feet: Zp = WLc - Xc where: Zp = altitude of pressure sensor, in feet, and WLc = corrected water-level altitude, in feet. Note that the conductivity/temperature sensor is below the pressure sensor. The altitude of each conductivity/temperature reading, in feet, was computed by: Zc = Zp - (Coff - Poff) where: Zc = altitude of conductivity/temperature sensor, in feet, and Coff = 3.66 feet (the distance from the zero mark on the cable to the estimated location of the conductivity/temperature sensor of the CTD). DESCRIPTION OF DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE FROM CONDUCTIVITY: Specific conductance was calculated from the fluid conductivity and the temperature using the following equation: SC = C/[1 + f*(T-25)] where: SC = Specific conductance, in millisiemens per centimeter, C = Measured conductivity, in millisiemens per centimeter, T = Measured temperature, in degrees Celsius, and f = temperature correction coefficient. "f" changes depending on the fluid used. A standard value, published in "Standard Methods..." (Greenberg and others, 1980) of 0.0191 (determined using a standard calibration fluid of pure potassium chloride solution) was used for this archive. Although accuracy considerations do not warrant this amount of precision, it is kept to retain the small changes from point to point and obtain an internally consistent profile that reveals the fine detail of each measured parameter with depth.
